What Is ILR and Why Does It Matter?

Indefinite Leave to Remain UK (ILR) is a key immigration status that grants individuals the right to live and work in the UK without time restrictions. For many, it’s the final step before applying for British citizenship. At Visa Simple, we assist clients across various ILR routes—whether through long residence, family visas, or the Skilled Worker Visa pathway.

Eligibility and Key Requirements?

Applicants typically need to demonstrate continuous lawful residence in the UK, pass the Life in the UK Test, and meet English language requirements. Absences from the UK, criminal records, and gaps in lawful status can impact eligibility. Our team helps clients navigate these technicalities to avoid delays or rejections.

How Visa Simple Supports Your Journey?

With years of experience in UK immigration law, Visa Simple offers tailored guidance from eligibility checks to document preparation. We also support transitions from visas like the UK Partner Visa and assist with employer-issued Certificate of Sponsorship documentation where applicable.

The Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) is a crucial requirement for individuals applying for a Skilled Worker Visa in the UK. This electronic document is issued by a licensed employer who has offered you a job in an eligible occupation.

The Certificate of Sponsorship confirms your employer’s willingness to sponsor your employment in the UK and provides details about your job role, salary, and contract. Without a valid CoS, your visa application cannot proceed.

Employers must meet specific requirements to issue a CoS, including being approved by the UK Home Office as a licensed sponsor. The job offered must also meet eligibility criteria, such as being on the Shortage Occupation List or meeting minimum salary thresholds.

There are two types of CoS: "Defined" and "Undefined." Defined CoS is for applicants applying from outside the UK, while Undefined CoS is for those already in the country. Employers must apply for a CoS allocation each year and justify the need for sponsorship.

If you’re an applicant, ensure your prospective employer has provided all the necessary details in the CoS, as errors can lead to visa delays. For employers, compliance with sponsorship rules is critical to maintain their license.

A Certificate of Sponsorship is not just a formality—it’s your gateway to working legally in the UK under a Skilled Worker Visa. Proper preparation ensures a smoother visa application process and the opportunity to advance your career.
