Stupid question about braided shield

So, my first antenna attempt is the homebrew Yagi from the summer edition of On the Air, and being a newbie, I cannot figure out how to separate the braided outer shield from the inner core of the coax, to solder them to the driven element. Do I literally have to unbraid it, or is there something I'm missing...I need to separate the 2 for about 4 inches, per the photo on pg 25. TIA for the help. |

I've used a metal scribe to move the strands of coax braid to create a hole for passing the center conductor through. A scratch awl can also be used. Zak W1VT ARRL Senior Lab Engineer |

One thing that may seem obvious (but maybe not to a newbie) is: After you remove the outer vinyl shell, bend (NOT sharply) the exposed region 30 or 40 degrees. This causes the braid on the INSIDE of the bend to slacken and 'bunch' a little, which makes separating it MUCH easier. Larry K0WUQ |
