Does anyone have any ideas about how much power you would tend to loose (in general) with, say, a 15 ft MFJ “HamStick” Dipole (ie now Hamtenna”) on a tripod in an upstairs ROOM vs just having the same antenna/tripod OUTSIDE in a field? Any thoughts appreciated! Peter A, K6PAA |

Difficult to predict exactly -- a lot would depend on the building construction. SSB contacts may be difficult but you should have no trouble making CW and digital contacts. Many hams in your situation prefer to use a loop antenna -- just a wire running around the edge of the ceiling, fed in one corner with window line or open-wire feedline. This would almost certainly require an antenna tuner, but the antenna could be used on multiple bands. 73, Mark AI4BJ |

There are web sites that can give you the approximate RF attenuation for various building materials and construction techniques. Bill |
